Visualization for Relaxation

Visualization techniques are integral to deep relaxation. The Radical Relaxation Meditation facilitates visuals in order to focus attention and regulate the breath. Following the guidance and letting yourself get lost in the imagery is perhaps the easiest way to relax deeply. You don’t have to do anything and there is no right or wrong experience.

Visualization has many benefits. That is why it is used by athletes as a technique for improving performance. Visualizing all the elements of a successful physical performance has the same effect on the brain as if it were an actual physical performance. The mind does not know the difference.

In addition to improving performance, visualization has been used for creating intention and accomplishing goals. It has also been used to promote good health and as an antidote for disease or injury. Many people who have accomplished their goals or healed from injury relate their success to spending a few minutes per day visualizing themselves having or doing what they imagine in great detail, as if it had already happened.

During our monthly Lakulish Yoga Workshop last weekend our Bapuji was explaining techniques and processes from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. More than once he asked us to close our eyes and visualize what he was explaining. He wanted us to actually experience and therefore more fully understand what he was describing.

During Radical Relaxation, guided visualizations help the mind and body relax into the alpha state. Alpha brain waves occur in deep relaxation. The body remains still and the mind is neither fully awake nor fully asleep. It is deeply relaxed and aware. This state of mind and body promotes healing on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
